Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

July Relaxer Update

I briefly mentioned my relaxer in the last post but it's taken me a while for a proper update.

Hair is still curly. Even though I use extra strength relaxer and for the longest recommended time my hair does not relax straight. I am grateful that I can put a comb through it and that's the main thing for me.

Last stretch I was trying to see how I could manage with just bunning my hair. While it is the simplest way to have my hair up at my current length there are a few challenges especially as the stretch goes on.

By the time I relaxed I was more than ready. It's not a major deal breaker but when you are going through a challenging season taking your bun down so you  can moisturise and seal your hair and put it back up can be just one task too many on your list. Sometimes even wash day has to be pushed back a few and that may add more work down the track.

I am going to try different ways of putting my hair up and see which ones work well for me. I generally don't like having my hair down and this has been a life saver reducing styling time in most cases and also reducing heat styling. In fact the only times I have heat are when I plan to trim my hair.

Since relaxing in July I have had my hair in two braids. I thought to change things up and put it in the top bun in the picture. This is my first top bun since I started growing it out again. I like braids or cornrows because they can easily last me until next wash day. They also allow access to the scalp and can be quick to do as well. They are nice and flat if I want to use headwraps or scarves. I would like to alternate between two and four braids.

Buns will still be part of the program but more so just after relaxer and the week before relaxer. This is where I need the least amount of manipulation or tension on my hair. I am still researching other hair styles to incorporate that last me a week at least that can be used to switch things up instead of just putting my hair in a bun.

This stretch I am back to using my coconut oil as well. I apply some oil on my scalp on wash day and use it for sealing in the moisture when I moisturise.

What are your go to hair styles?

Still here

Checking in to say I am still here. The year has been overwhelming and somehow my hair has survived too. I kept thinking I need a low maintenance style for those times however am yet to find one low enough. Apart from being bald... Will keep trying out different things. Hope you're well and have managed to keep hair on your head. If there's any ideas for a super low maintenance style would love to hear about it!

Lifestyle hair length goal

It's been a while since my last note. I have been thinking about my goal hair length and how that fits with my lifestyle.  As my hair grows longer managing it take longer. Washing, drying and styling. The perfect balance for me of length and my lifestyle is around shoulder length. Just enough length to put it up in a bun or ponytail and easy enough to manage.  However I'd also really like to have classic length hair. That is my ultimate goal in terms of length. So now I'm trying to find a way to manage my hair at any length that's not draining. My health isn't always the best and usually when I am low on energy a lot of things fall out of my hair routine. Sometimes having water run through my hair is all I can manage and other times not even that. I want to reach my goal with full, shiny and luscious hair. So please share with me any tips you have on what's working for you and how to keep things as simple as possible.

June 2023 Update

After a bit of fumbling relaxer day went well. I think they changed something about the sticks used to mix the relaxer. Last time it broke in half and this time it just felt so short and useless... Is it just me? It took a while to flat iron and trim but I'm glad I got it done. I took off just over an inch this time. I could have cut more but considering this was my first real cut since my haphazard chop I also didn't want to be scissor happy! I am going to continue with having a trim with every relaxer. Been thinking about my grey hair more. As it starts to out number my black hair I'll be monitoring to see if this raises any issues with relaxing. How often do you get your trims?
