Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

Day 2: Why I relax my hair

Day 2 hair is still feeling and looking great. I have been mostly at home and kept it under my scarf. It's still cold.

I thought to share why I choose to relax my hair. All it comes down to is it's a lifestyle choice. My schedule is very hectic and having a whole day dedicated to washing my hair on a regular basis just doesn't work.

Having my hair relaxed means that I can wash, style it and be out the door in an hour or less. My relaxer routine is roughly an hour and a half.

If need be I can breakdown the process into smaller chunks over 2days for example and not worry about my hair being a matted mess. Cowashing can also be a lifesaver for those times I need  to freshen up my hair without the full wash process.

I don't use heat a lot because of the amount of time needed on top of my wash or relaxer routine. Also I am no silk press queen. I am sure with more practice I will get better at it. Since deciding to go full diy I have decided to flat iron every 4 months when I will do my trims or dustings.

Sometimes things don't always go to plan and I have found that my relaxed hair is more forgiving when I fall off the wagon. My natural hair is very coily and tangles very easily. If I don't regularly remove shed hair for some time it starts matting and can take days to fully detangle. Wearing any protective styles for longer than 4weeks without refreshing for example I can already feel the matted sections rearing their heads just from touching my hair.

I love when I get a fresh relaxer and can run my fingers through my hair. Little things like this reduce my overall stress as it's one less thing to worry about. I have also been excited to get my hair to a length where I can just put it in a bun if I don't have time to braid it or do fancy styles. Again the little things make so much difference.

As part of learning about my hair and how I want it to fit in my life, how long it takes to get it done was one point. Other learning points were the kinds of styles I can do with my hair length, how long I can comfortably stretch my relaxer without damaging it and now I am looking forward to learning my ideal length.

How long does it take you to do your hair?

Still here

Checking in to say I am still here. The year has been overwhelming and somehow my hair has survived too. I kept thinking I need a low maintenance style for those times however am yet to find one low enough. Apart from being bald... Will keep trying out different things. Hope you're well and have managed to keep hair on your head. If there's any ideas for a super low maintenance style would love to hear about it!

Lifestyle hair length goal

It's been a while since my last note. I have been thinking about my goal hair length and how that fits with my lifestyle.  As my hair grows longer managing it take longer. Washing, drying and styling. The perfect balance for me of length and my lifestyle is around shoulder length. Just enough length to put it up in a bun or ponytail and easy enough to manage.  However I'd also really like to have classic length hair. That is my ultimate goal in terms of length. So now I'm trying to find a way to manage my hair at any length that's not draining. My health isn't always the best and usually when I am low on energy a lot of things fall out of my hair routine. Sometimes having water run through my hair is all I can manage and other times not even that. I want to reach my goal with full, shiny and luscious hair. So please share with me any tips you have on what's working for you and how to keep things as simple as possible.

June 2023 Update

After a bit of fumbling relaxer day went well. I think they changed something about the sticks used to mix the relaxer. Last time it broke in half and this time it just felt so short and useless... Is it just me? It took a while to flat iron and trim but I'm glad I got it done. I took off just over an inch this time. I could have cut more but considering this was my first real cut since my haphazard chop I also didn't want to be scissor happy! I am going to continue with having a trim with every relaxer. Been thinking about my grey hair more. As it starts to out number my black hair I'll be monitoring to see if this raises any issues with relaxing. How often do you get your trims?
