Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

Relaxer Update: March 2021

It's been a while since my last update. Hope you have all been well, learning and making progress towards your goals.

I try to use each relaxer stretch as way to find my ideal routine, products etc. Last stretch I had noticed some itching and flaking on my scalp and wanted to get to the bottom of it. It wasn't a major irritation but it made me feel like I needed to wash my hair more often. One ain't nobody got time for that and two the dollars I have are finite, also there was no guarantee washing more often would resolve it. I am looking to make a nice routine that I can manage in spite of what life may throw at me.

Having said that I completely stripped back what I was doing. I stopped oiling my scalp. Initially I had stopped using my oil mix and went down to just olive oil but my scalp was itching before the week was out. I tried just my coconut oil and had the same result so I completely stopped. The itching and flaking completely reduced. When I deep conditioned I had the same issue so now I am only deep conditioning on relaxer day. Of course I am still checking how my hair is going so will bring things back if and when required. Right now the bare minimum of shampoo and conditioner is working for me. I like it too because wash day doesn't last all day.

I am still keeping my hair in cornrows. I am also back to work and things are open here so we are going into the office and all that. I have been experimenting with different styles of head scarfs and that's pretty much my go to at the moment. My wash day is now every two weeks and I usually try and redo my cornrows too. This normally takes me about an hour so if my time is not too stretched I get all done in one go otherwise I would redo the braids the following day.

Now onto this latest relaxer day. I had stretched for 9weeks this time. It went well. I have switched to using the ORS Extra Strength box relaxer. The normal one wasn't doing it for me. Even my mum was confused whether I had been getting a perm instead of relaxer! While this was just the first time using it my hair was much more stretched compared to curly from previous relaxers. I let it air dry as I did not have much time from when I finished and my next appointment for the day.

My hair is coming along nicely. I am now debating on whether I should invest in a better flat iron so I can straighten my hair with the next relaxer for a length check as well as a possible trim if required. My current stretching routine is to cornrow my hair 2 weeks after relaxer, wash and rebraid every 2 weeks and take them out a week before next relaxer as I prep my hair for relaxer. I still clarify my hair once a month and moisturise and seal on my wash days.

How are things going for you so far? Any questions let me know in the comments.

Still here

Checking in to say I am still here. The year has been overwhelming and somehow my hair has survived too. I kept thinking I need a low maintenance style for those times however am yet to find one low enough. Apart from being bald... Will keep trying out different things. Hope you're well and have managed to keep hair on your head. If there's any ideas for a super low maintenance style would love to hear about it!

Lifestyle hair length goal

It's been a while since my last note. I have been thinking about my goal hair length and how that fits with my lifestyle.  As my hair grows longer managing it take longer. Washing, drying and styling. The perfect balance for me of length and my lifestyle is around shoulder length. Just enough length to put it up in a bun or ponytail and easy enough to manage.  However I'd also really like to have classic length hair. That is my ultimate goal in terms of length. So now I'm trying to find a way to manage my hair at any length that's not draining. My health isn't always the best and usually when I am low on energy a lot of things fall out of my hair routine. Sometimes having water run through my hair is all I can manage and other times not even that. I want to reach my goal with full, shiny and luscious hair. So please share with me any tips you have on what's working for you and how to keep things as simple as possible.

June 2023 Update

After a bit of fumbling relaxer day went well. I think they changed something about the sticks used to mix the relaxer. Last time it broke in half and this time it just felt so short and useless... Is it just me? It took a while to flat iron and trim but I'm glad I got it done. I took off just over an inch this time. I could have cut more but considering this was my first real cut since my haphazard chop I also didn't want to be scissor happy! I am going to continue with having a trim with every relaxer. Been thinking about my grey hair more. As it starts to out number my black hair I'll be monitoring to see if this raises any issues with relaxing. How often do you get your trims?
