Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

5 Oct 20 - 5 Jan 21 Hairlicious Castor Oil Challenge Experience

Over on Instagram Val (@hairlicious) was hosting a castor oil challenge from October for 3 months and this has just finished.

I was so excited to join the challenge, I signed up so fast! Then I had to dig through my cupboards to see if I had any castor oil. I found some Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil from a while back and was relieved I could participate.

The reason for the excitement was that I was rebuilding my routine and trying to be consistent. This challenge would help me stay on track and be accountable with the weekly check ins. I joined the basic level for a few reasons. One of the reasons was that I hadn't used castor oil for a while and I couldn't remember the reason I stopped. I didn't want to join at a higher level with higher usage without knowing how my hair will react. The other reason was also to not overwhelm myself so the requirement to apply castor oil 1-2 times a week was just perfect for me.

First I incorporated the castor oil by applying it to my scalp and massaging after air drying my hair on wash day. That was my guaranteed once a week application. The next thing I did was to add a teaspoon to my deep conditioner as well. Towards the end I was running a bit low so I mixed it with my olive oil so it could stretch further and I still loved the results. By itself it is quite thick so you do have to apply it sparingly.

Now this was my first ever hair challenge and I picked up some handy tips should I take one on in the future. The first was taking starting photos for comparison at the end. When it started and most of the time I was in cornrows. I did take some pictures from my relaxer day in November so I will be doing a relaxer day comparison instead with my next one. The second was to know the reason why you are joining as you would need to this to stay on track. The other was to make a plan to incorporate the challenge requirements into your routine if you didn't already do it. Having a seamless transition in my routine really helped me keep on top of it.

I enjoyed the weekly check ins and for me they were mostly me loving my soft and moisturized hair. After 3 months you better believe I am keeping oiling my scalp and adding oils to my deep conditioner in my routine as I have loved the results and enjoyed having manageable hair. I have the challenge check ins saved in my highlights on my Instagram page as well.

Were you also part of the challenge? Do you use castor oil for your hair? Please share I'd love to hear your experiences with castor oil or any other oil that you use for your hair.

Still here

Checking in to say I am still here. The year has been overwhelming and somehow my hair has survived too. I kept thinking I need a low maintenance style for those times however am yet to find one low enough. Apart from being bald... Will keep trying out different things. Hope you're well and have managed to keep hair on your head. If there's any ideas for a super low maintenance style would love to hear about it!

Lifestyle hair length goal

It's been a while since my last note. I have been thinking about my goal hair length and how that fits with my lifestyle.  As my hair grows longer managing it take longer. Washing, drying and styling. The perfect balance for me of length and my lifestyle is around shoulder length. Just enough length to put it up in a bun or ponytail and easy enough to manage.  However I'd also really like to have classic length hair. That is my ultimate goal in terms of length. So now I'm trying to find a way to manage my hair at any length that's not draining. My health isn't always the best and usually when I am low on energy a lot of things fall out of my hair routine. Sometimes having water run through my hair is all I can manage and other times not even that. I want to reach my goal with full, shiny and luscious hair. So please share with me any tips you have on what's working for you and how to keep things as simple as possible.

June 2023 Update

After a bit of fumbling relaxer day went well. I think they changed something about the sticks used to mix the relaxer. Last time it broke in half and this time it just felt so short and useless... Is it just me? It took a while to flat iron and trim but I'm glad I got it done. I took off just over an inch this time. I could have cut more but considering this was my first real cut since my haphazard chop I also didn't want to be scissor happy! I am going to continue with having a trim with every relaxer. Been thinking about my grey hair more. As it starts to out number my black hair I'll be monitoring to see if this raises any issues with relaxing. How often do you get your trims?
